The TMJ, which stands for the temporomandibular joint, is the join connecting the lower jaw to the rest of the head. The term “TMJ” often refers to TMJ disorder or TMD. TMJ disorder happens when the jaw joint becomes stressed, injured or misaligned. You may develop this disorder because of several different factors, such as stress, bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching), TMJ arthritis or trauma to your head, neck or jaw.

If you experience frequent jaw or facial pain, you may be suffering from TMD. TMJ disorders may also cause:

  • Grinding, clicking or popping sounds in the jaw when you open and close your mouth
  • Inability to open your mouth wide to speak, yawn or chew
  • A locked or stuck jaw
  • Pain while chewing and biting
  • Pain in neck, shoulders or ears
  • Frequent headaches

Our dentist will help you figure out the cause of your TMD and create a treatment plan to help you find relief. The treatment recommended will depend on what is causing your TMD and how severe it is. There are many treatments for TMJ disorder, such as jaw and facial relaxation exercises, lifestyle changes, restorative dental treatments, a mouth or night guard or jaw surgery. We invite you to call us today to learn more about TMJ treatment and schedule a consultation with our dentist.
